Cold Exposure Improves Mental and Physical Health- A recent study has revealed that regular cold exposure can have beneficial effects on soldiers’ mental and physical wellbeing. Conducted by researchers from the Czech Army, this research sought to investigate how regular cold exposure affected young soldiers’ psychological status as well as their physical composition.
This study involved 49 soldiers (male and female) aged 19-30 years who were randomly assigned to either an intervention or control group. The intervention group underwent regular cold exposure for 8 weeks, both indoors and outdoors; while the control group did not.
Results revealed that regular exposure to cold led to significant improvements in health satisfaction, as well as a decrease in waist circumference and abdominal fat in men. Furthermore, systematic exposure to cold significantly reduced perceived anxiety across all test groups.
Researchers concluded that cold water exposure should be included in routine military training regimens. Studies have suggested it has a beneficial effect on mental status and physical composition, potentially leading to greater psychological resilience. Furthermore, cold exposure as part of military instruction may reduce anxiety levels among soldiers.
This study emphasizes the significance of optimal mental state and physical fitness when training military personnel. Integrating elements designed to improve soldiers’ psychological status and physical composition into training programmes could result in improved outcomes, with cold exposure possibly providing a useful tool to reach these objectives.
