National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture- India Takes Steps to Mitigate Climate Change

National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture- Government of India is taking action to mitigate climate change’s effect on agriculture and farmers’ lives. Recent studies predict that projected climate change scenarios for 2050 and 2080 will have a substantial effect on crop yields, particularly rice, wheat and maize.

Without adaptation measures taken, rainfed rice yields are predicted to decline by 20% in 2050 scenarios and 47% in 2080 ones; wheat yields would decrease 19.3% between 2050 and 2080 scenarios by end of century. Ultimately this reduction in production could lower nutrition quality of produce while increasing food and nutrient consumption among farmers.

To address these challenges, the Indian Government has taken numerous initiatives to make agriculture more resilient to climate change. The National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA) is one of the Missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), designed to devise and implement strategies that make Indian agriculture more resilient in light of climate change.

In 2011, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India launched a flagship network research project entitled ‘National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture’ (NICRA). This initiative has resulted in 1888 climate resilient varieties as well as 68 location-specific climate resilient technologies for wider adoption by farming communities around India.

Today, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, provided a written reply in Lok Sabha outlining their government’s initiatives towards climate resilience in agriculture. These initiatives are essential for maintaining food production while improving farmer lives amid climate change impacts.
