The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a public health alert concerning the recall of certain Everest and Maggi spices because of a potential Salmonella risk. The products under the spotlight include Everest Garam Masala, Everest Sambhar Masala, and Maggi Masala ae Magic, all of which were not labeled for distribution in the United States.
Amin Trading Agency LLC, based in Edison, NJ, purchased these spices at retail stores in India and subsequently imported and distributed them in the United States. Consumers are being urged not to consume these spices with the identified lot numbers.

Spices with Salmonella Risk
The recall applies to consumers who have recently purchased the following spices sold at retail stores in GA, NC, OH, MD, TN, TX, MS, FL, VA, NJ, NY, and PA:
- Everest Garam Masala, 100 grams, coded U25D390373, with UPC: 8 901786 101009
- Everest Sambhar Masala, 100 grams, coded U04D384296, with UPC: 8 901786 081004
- Maggi Masala ae Magic, 6 grams, 20640 455AA
The FDA conducted an analysis of samples of the three products, with results showing they were contaminated with Salmonella.
Timeline and Recall Details
These spices were manufactured in India, imported to the United States, and distributed to retail stores in various states starting March 16, 2023. The recall was initiated on June 1, 2023, after the FDA’s test results confirmed Salmonella contamination. All remaining product on hand with the recalling firm was destroyed under FDA supervision.
FDA Steps and Future Actions
The FDA is continuing to ensure these products are removed from the market and has subjected the products to a “Detention Without Physical Examination Of Food Products Due To The Presence Of Salmonella” under Import Alert #99-19.
The manufacturers, including the foreign manufacturers of Everest Garam Masala and Everest Sambhar Masala, have been contacted and have issued a press release.
Salmonella: A Silent Threat
Salmonella is a group of bacteria known to cause salmonellosis, a condition characterized by symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, typically developing 12 to 72 hours after infection.
While most people recover within four to seven days without treatment, severe cases can occur, leading to high fever, aches, headaches, lethargy, rashes, and even blood in the urine or stool. In some instances, salmonellosis can become fatal. The disease tends to hit hardest among children under five, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.
Given these risks, consumers who have purchased the implicated products are strongly advised to discard them immediately and not to consume them under any circumstances.
