The Advisory and Its Recommendations

In its advisory released on July 19, the Department of Drugs Control emphasized that vector-borne diseases like Dengue Outbreak and chikungunya tend to escalate during the rainy season. To prevent further complications and safeguard public health, the department advised retail chemists to refrain from over-the-counter sales of NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like Aspirin, Ibuprofen, and Diclofenac group of medicines.

These medicines, if misused, may exacerbate the destruction of platelets in human blood, leading to severe bleeding and complications.

Furthermore, the advisory instructed chemist shop owners to maintain records of painkiller drugs falling under this category. Strict compliance with these measures was urged, with the warning of stringent action against those found flouting the advice.

Doctors have voiced concerns about the unmonitored use of Aspirin, Ibuprofen, and similar drugs, especially in patients with vector-borne diseases. Dr. Anurag Saxena, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at Primus Super Specialty Hospital, stressed that controlled usage of these drugs is essential.

He emphasized that dengue and chikungunya can cause body ache along with fever, which might lead to the use of painkillers. However, he urged patients to avoid self-medication and take these medications only as per dosages prescribed by qualified doctors.

Platelets play a critical role in blood clotting, and their depletion can be life-threatening for patients affected by vector-borne diseases. Therefore, prudent use of painkillers is crucial to avoid exacerbating the health conditions of these patients.

According to a municipal report released on Monday, Delhi has witnessed over 160 dengue cases until mid-July this year, marking the highest number of cases during this period since 2018. Additionally, 54 cases of malaria have been recorded in the same period.
