How to use Animal Randomization Tool?

  1. Open the Animal Randomization Tool in your web browser.
  2. Under the "Animal ID" label, type in a unique identifier for your animal. This could be a number or a name.
  3. Under the "Body Weight" label, type in the animal's body weight. You can use decimals for more precision.
  4. Click on the "Add Animal" button. The animal you just entered will be added to the list, and the fields will be cleared for you to enter another animal.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 until you've entered all of your animals.
  6. After all animals are added, you have two ways to group them:6.1. Under the "Animals per Group" label, type in how many animals you want in each group. Click on the "Randomize Groups" button, and the tool will assign each animal to a group, attempting to ensure each group has roughly the same total body weight.6.2. Alternatively, under the "Number of Groups" label, type in how many groups you want to divide animals into. Click on the "Randomize Groups" button, and the tool will assign each animal to a group, dividing them into the number of groups you specified.
  7. The table below will display all animals with their IDs, body weights, and the group they have been assigned to.
  8. You can add more animals or change the group settings at any time. The table will be updated every time you click a button.

Uses of Animal Randomization Tool

The Animal Randomization Tool is primarily used in scientific and biomedical research where animal models are employed. It aids in the experimental design by ensuring a balanced distribution of animals across different groups. Below are some of its key uses:

Improves Experiment Design: The tool helps in assigning animals to different groups such that the body weight is balanced across the groups. This reduces bias and improves the accuracy of the experiment.

Facilitates Randomization: The tool helps in ensuring that the assignment of animals to different groups is random and not influenced by any subjective factors, thereby increasing the validity of the experimental results.

Saves Time: The tool automates the process of animal assignment, saving the researcher's time in manual assignment and calculations.

Flexibility: The tool allows researchers to decide the number of groups or the number of animals per group based on the requirements of their specific experiment.

Enhances Reproducibility: By using this tool, other researchers can follow the same grouping process, improving the reproducibility of the experiment.

Documentation: It provides a clear record of how animals were assigned to each group, which can be useful for record-keeping, analysis, and reporting purposes.

Ethical Considerations: The tool helps in adhering to the ethical considerations in animal research by ensuring that the number of animals used is minimized and their use is maximized effectively. This aligns with the 3Rs principle in animal research: Replace, Reduce, and Refine.
